How long will it take to study the PHP language?

I am 29 years old now, a structural engineer by profession, and considering changing careers. Actually, I was already doing HTML and other programming languages back in '95 - but my then-courses in engineering took my time and I haven't been an IT guy since. So now, I wanna know - how long will it take to study the PHP language, good enough so that I could design and write web-based apps? If you add in some knowledge about databases, and whatever else is needed to design and write web-based apps, how much longer? Again, I have basic knowledge in HTML (in fact I used to prepare my HTML pages in Notepad).

  1. IF... IF you already know another programming language, such as for example C or C++, then PHP isn't that hard. Read a book, experiment, and you'll have enough of it down to write simple apps in mere weeks. May I recommend installing XAMPP? It contains Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl in an easy installer. Everything you need to get started/going.
  2. It all depends on how much time you dedicate yourself & commit to "training hours." Also, how good your 'teacher' is - use the right books. I think 6-months should be enough if you put in daily effort. This should include database-structuring as well. Could take longer though, because may burn out somewhere in between. Personally, I would'nt recommend you to have a career-shift if you're thinking of becoming a freelance web-programmer.
  3. I know you don't like to hear this, but yes itt depends on what you want to do with PHP. If you have basic HTML knowledge then all you need programming basics to help you make load your dynamic part of the pages. If that's all what you're interested in, then it is a fairly easy task. You will also need to work with a Relational Database Management System. You will need to know how to design tables under the relational model to store your data. Again, the complexity of this depends on what you want to store / query in your database. For fairly simple stuff, I expect that you will need around two or three weeks to get started. You'll need around one week to research the basics and figure out what to download / install and configure on your computer. You'll need at least another two weeks to be construction fairly simple pages with dynamic content. Good Luck!
  4. U can login to php.net for consult about PHP, In here ,it's have good code for Example
